What Is Herniated Disc?
Written by Jonathan Green
In between the vertebrae of the spine there are discs that are cartilaginous and soft in nature. The discs present in between do not get any supply of blood and are therefore termed as avascular. The function of the discs is to act as something that absorbs shocks. There are tissues that surround these discs and the vertebrae and they are called ligaments. These ligaments are strong and also fibrous in nature. Despite all these forms of protection these discs can get damaged at the center of the discs. This condition is called herniated disc and also rupturing of the disc.

Causes of Herniated disc

There are many factors that cause herniated disc. Some of them are as follows:
  • Age is a major factor that causes the discs to degenerate and that is the main cause of herniated disc. It can also be caused by the damage that is caused by the use and the wearing of the discs that cause herniated disc.
  • If the vertebrae are affected by any injury then that too can cause the rupturing of the disc.
  • Another cause is the sudden carrying of weights which can cause strain and at times even a sprain in the rear end of the vertebrae. And this strain will result in the rupturing of the disc.
  • Rupturing can also be a result of an accident and at times also because of an injury due to any sporting activity.

Symptoms of herniated disc

Explained below are some of the symptoms of the rupturing of the disc:
  • The most prominent symptom is the painful experience caused to the person. The pain can be resembled to a pain that is similar to a stab. The pain usually exists at the lower end of the back and the main reason for this is that the discs that most often gets damaged is the one between fourth and the fifth vertebrae.
  • However one cannot rule out the possibility of a disc on the upper end getting damaged. In this event the pain that is experienced is on the chest, arm or even the shoulders and at times the ribs. Therefore one can conclude that the symptoms vary depending on the area of the vertebrae that has been affected.
  • If the rupture or damage has been caused on the low end of the vertebrae the pain that is caused is on the leg and the lower-end of the back. It can also cause sciatica. This happens when the nerves are pinched between the ruptures discs and this pain travels from the end of the back all the way up to the buttocks and the up to the legs.
  • There are some more symptoms that are prominent in this case and they are: a sensation on the leg that can be resembled to a tingle, The weakening of the muscles,  A numb feeling especially in the part of the body that is affected and Spasm of the muscles.

Treatments available for herniated disc

The right time to meet the doctor would be when a person experiences pain that is beyond the degree of tolerance. In order to detect the cause of the pain the doctor may take an x-ray or a CT scan. Either ways a rupture of the disc is clearly visible. In order to check for the injury that has been caused to the nerved there is a technique called Electromyogram or EMG.

In order to reduce the degree of the pain the doctor will give the patient some medicines. In order to reduce the inflaming doctors also give medicines and injections. However this procedure will have to be terminated if the pain and the inflammation continue and the only option left will be surgery of the ruptured disc.

Surgeries are rarely required and complete cure of the damaged disc is possible. However one must understand that there is a lot of time that is involved in the complete recovery. Apart from the above mentioned ways of curing physiotherapy also is an option. Treatment of herniated disc is very essential. It needs to be administered in time and from the right resource. There are a number of alternate treatment therapies also floating around the internet and offline. However, it is imperative to research and understand the condition and only then address the remedial alternative with the assistance of the doctor.

The condition is completely curable and it is only in the face of neglect that there is marked deterioration in lifestyle quantum. In order to overcome both the pain and the discomfort associated with the condition, you should reach out for help from the medical fraternity at the very onset. Ignorance and neglect only spell a longer period of medication and therapy. Spine care and a disciplined lifestyle are the key areas to be addressed here.
