Sleep Aids for Children

Children usually are known to get good sleep. This is because as a child an individual usually does not have to go through a lot of tension or stress as compared to an adult. However, there are children who face problems with sleep and who do not get proper sleep in the night. Most of the children face this problem because of fear. Many of them fear darkness and hence they are not very comfortable to shut their eyes and sleep. Some children face this problem occasionally while others face this every night. The children who are facing it every night is said to be suffering from insomnia. Insomnia is a sleeping disorder which is usually seen in the case of adults.

Many parents believe that sleeping disorders cannot occur in children or infants because of the fact that children are not under pressure mentally like the adults are. Some parents believe that babies who sleep less than usual have a high IQ and they turn out to be brilliant babies. However, this theory has not been proved yet and many experts also say that it is from being the fact.

The most common reason for sleep disorder amongst babies is because they want their parents to notice them. Another major reason is the fact that they might be suffering from some kind of digestive problem. Often, digestive problem can lead to improper sleep. This problem can be easily detected if you notice that the baby cries over 3 hours every day. Infants have a tendency to get hungry at any point of time. They don’t really have any eating or sleeping pattern. Many a time babies do not get sleep because of the fact that they feel hungry late in the night. These are the same cases with children.

It is very obvious that children and new born babies should be strictly kept away from any kind of sleeping pills or any medication that can induce sleep in them. A sleeping pill usually consists of a heavy sleep doze which can be disastrous for the health of your child.

One of the best sleep aids for children is to make them feel as comfortable as they can. It is very important for you as parents to take proper care of your child. You need to pay as much attention as you can towards your child. Do not make him/her feel lonely at any stage. If your child is facing sleeping disorder then it is highly recommended that you stay with the child till the time he/she goes off to sleep. You can probably read out a story to your child and help him/her divert the mind and relax.

Many a times children do not get sleep because of the fact that loud music is played at home or television is being watched at a higher volume. Make sure that even if you watch television, you keep the volume low and do not disturb the sleep of your child. Another thing you need to make sure is send the child to sleep only when he/she feels sleepy. Many parents force the child to sleep early as they think that sleeping late would mean that they might get late to school the next day. You should understand the fact that sleep is not something that can be forced onto anyone. It is a natural phenomenon. Once the child starts sleeping when he/she feels sleepy then they would enjoy the sleep.

As a parent you also need to make sure that you don’t watch too much violence on television while your child is sitting in the same room and watching television. This can create a feeling of fear in the child’s mind and many a times this turns out to be a very common reason for not getting proper sleep. It is very important for children to be in a state of relaxed mind. As an adult you are very strong emotionally and mentally as compared to your child. However, the entire picture of violence or the sequence stays in the memory of the child and he/she recollects all the memories when they are alone in the dark room trying to get some sleep. Some might feel this experience for a single night and get proper sleep from the following night. However, there are a few cases where in the child is not able to get those violent pictures out of the mind for weeks and even months.

As a parent, you are the best sleeping aid for your child. There is nothing like you and your child feels very secure and safe if you are around him/her. A little attention from your side can make a world of difference in the life of your child and help him/her get good sleep which every child rightly deserves
